Infologics, Inc. Awarded Patent On Subject
Classification Technology
March 23, 2000 Los Angeles, Today
a patent was approved by the Patent Office for Uniform Subject Classification technology,
developed by Lowrie W. McIntosh of Infologics, Inc. of Los Angeles, CA. The system
organizes information by subject and automatically applies legislation that defines legal
retention. This classification technology is a major advancement for the information
industry. Uniform Subject Classification has been the main ingredient missing from an
Enterprise integration of Knowledge Management .
The Uniform Subject Classification system provides a way to achieve uniformity when
classifying any type of document or electronic file by subject. Using general to specific
classification headings in a simply structured hierarchy, the user is directed to a
single, appropriate classification for the document they wish to file or find. The
classification code structure is linked to all relevant document management functions, as
well as legal and administrative retention requirements. The system is a technique for
uniformly classifying documents using terms in current use by the enterprise.
Importantly, application of the System does not require changing any indexing now used.
The System provides a true interlingual mechanism. Users can employ their own personal
synonyms to search for documents. Synonyms make it possible for anyone to use industry
jargon, acronyms, company terminology, or foreign terms. From an inventory of current
terms currently used to describe records, the system "learns" as synonyms are
added, bridging different individuals perception of a subject.
The Uniform Subject Classification system assigns a single, unique classification to
each record series. It is directly connected to the Chart-of-Accounts (or Organization
Chart), and to legislative citations for retention of documents. The System makes certain
that documents are consistently classified, since classifications are used for KM
searches, for enforcing records management policies, document security, supporting
disaster recovery systems, and predictable replications.
